BikeBrain iPhone Cycling App Updated!

Hi Bob,

BikeBrain doesn’t support ANT+. We originally planned to use ANT+ but decided to go with Bluetooth Smart since it’s built into a lot of the newer smartphones like the iPhone 5.

I’m going through the throes of trying to figure out whether and how BikeBrain uses ANT+ sensors. First – have you had any luck with your problem? If you remove the iPhone from the case and then insert the dongle does everything work? I have an iPhone 5 and have decided to purchase an adapter from DealExtreme that appears to accept the dongle, has a Lightning plug, and allows for an external battery (uses USB plug). Hi there – Firstly, you’ll need to confirm that your sensor is Bluetooth 4.0 compatible, as this is the technology BikeBrain uses. Then you’ll also need to confirm that you’re running iOS 5.0 or later. If you’ve confirmed both of these things and your HR sensor still isn’t working, try deleting the app from your phone and then reinstalling it. I am unable to connect my polar bluetooth HR to Bike Brain pro ( on an iphone 4s), any idea how to solve this?

Hi Keith – so glad you’re enjoying BikeBrain! Currently, there isn’t a limit in BikeBrain or the iOS on the duration of a trip. As long as you still have battery left and available storage in your iPhone, BikeBrain will continue to save a new trip. However, when BikeBrain is running in the background, it will show a reminder message like this, every now and again:

“This is a reminder that BikeBrain has been recording a trip in the background for 3 hr. Tap `Close’ to dismiss this message if you want it to continue recording.”

This purpose is to assure you that the BikeBrain app is still alive if you are riding a long trip. On the other hand, if you have forgotten to stop the trip recording after you have finished your ride, the reminder may save your phone battery from going completely flat.

The most effective way to save battery when BikeBrain is recording a trip is simply turn off the iPhone screen by pressing the sleep button at the top of the phone. A full charge on iPhone 4S should easily record trips up to 4 hours. If you need a full charge for longer rides, we suggest our ReeCharge Case or ReeCharge Dynamo Kit.

Am I correct that the apple iOS requirements make it so that I can not run Bike Brain in the background for 3+ hours…? I received a message like that while using it on a 5 hour ride..
I was worried about the battery life in my apple 4S phone… so I’d flip the phone to “no screen/sleep mode” (I bet theres a more accurate term for that!) and it was wonderful to see that even while asleep, your app would keep recording… but then I’d get the time out warnings..
Can you clarify what the time out period is and maybe even provide guidance on how using bike brain effects the battery life… I presume the app doesnt really impact the normal battery life of your phone, yet most of us dont keep our cell phone screens on all the time as that saps battery life…
sorry for the ramble.. just thinking out loud.
PS – great product, once I figure out how to make best use on 3 to 10 hr rides, i’m up for cadence and heart… :)

Hi Tom – we are unable to offer compatibility with Polar products because they use a proprietary system on their devises. However, we are working to offer Bluetooth compatibility in our next BikeBrain update so stay tuned for details!

I have used both Bike Brain and Strava while on a bike ride and the Bike Brain comes up abou10% short. Which one is correct? I also notice that the Calories is way off but I guess that is because it can nopt see my HR monitor because it is Polar. I often get a VERY high MAX speed?????

NONE of the cycling programs accept Polar. The need Garmin. I have asked Bike Brain and the answer was that no Polar acceptance is in the future.

I have downloaded your BikeBrain application for iPhone and also have bought 4 of your iPhone casings (2 with no built-in chargers, and 2 with built-in charger) during the month of April 2012. In total, I have ordered for a total of nearly 1000$ from your website. I separately purchased an ANT+ key (from Digifit) as well as heart rate and speed/cadence sensors (again spent hundreds of dollars hoping that all would be compatible). I now am learning that although you website lead us to believe that your BikeBrain application supports heart rate sensors, it does not yet. Additionnally, you indicate here that you plan your application to work with the ANT+ keys, however, the ANT+ key DOES NOT fit in ANY of your iPhone casings for bicycle. I spent hundreds of dollars and now realize that even though your application supports ANT+ key in the future, it will not fit the casing you sold me?! The only thing I can hope for is that you create an external ANT+ adaptor or a smaller ANT+ adaptor. Please reply to me and help me/us all… because otherwise, I just lost hundreds of dollars buying all kinds of products from your website hoping that they would all work with an ANT+ key. Please make sure that your existing casing will still work in the ANT+ environement. I wouldn’t want to force to return the casings to you and demand a refund?! For heartbeat will be compatible with BikeBrain Pro version.
We are currently working on a Bike Brain Pro Version and the related hardwares of ANT+ sensors will be available once Pro Version ready, but have no definite date when it will be available.
However, when we release BikeBrain Pro, you will be able to use your preferred ANT+ sensors.
Polar heart rate monitor should not be compatible with Bike Brain Pro version.

Bike brain shows heart rate but I have worn my polar heart rate strap and the program did not record it?

So will this be one case with the integrated battery like the reecharge case and integrated ANT+ receiver? I hope so.

Hope the new bike mount will add ANT capability as you add cadence and Heart rate to the Bikebrain Pro.

When is bikebrain pro due out?

After ruining an iPhone getting caught in the rain on a ride, I purchased a biologic bike mount. I have been caught in hard rains twice now with no problems. Great product.
